Welcome to The Open Call List #115!

In this weekly newsletter, I share opportunities for photographers for exhibitions, publications, fellowships, grants, residencies, jobs, and more. My goal is to make the photography world more accessible, especially to emerging artists. While I include both free opportunities and calls for entry with submission fees, I only share opportunities that favor artists.

This week’s Open Call List contains 37 calls for entry, 19 of which offer free submission.

The list includes four fully-funded residency opportunities. It also includes four opportunities for funded solo exhibitions and/or exhibition proposals, as well as a wide range of additional calls to exhibit work, including calls from festivals, calls for analog photography, thematic calls, online exhibitions, and more. The list contains six separate calls for photobook dummies/projects, each of which offers publication and support from an established photobook publisher. Finally, this week’s list includes a range of additional funding, including grants and prizes ranging up $50,000, two calls that include paid acquisition of photographic works, a range of publication opportunities, and more.

Acquisition or purchase awards have the double benefit of awarding the winning photographer a monetary prize and placing that photographer’s work in a respected museum or gallery collection. I’m very excited to share this list of 22 annual (or, mostly annual) open calls for photography with acquisition and purchase awards.

Acquisition or purchase awards have the double benefit of awarding the winning photographer a monetary prize and placing that photographer’s work in an established museum or gallery collection.

Acquisition into an institutional collection is highly sought after because…

It is indicative of your photographic work being very strong. Generally, museums, galleries, and arts organizations only collect work that is of a very high quality.
An institution with a permanent collection will typically have facilities to store and steward properly the art in that collection. That means, when acquired, your work will be treated in a way that protects it and prioritizes its longevity.
Finally, placing your work in a permanent collection means that the holding institution can include in future exhibitions curated from the collection. Certain institutions also make their collections available to researchers, collectors, students, and visiting artists. In other words, acquisition gives your work an ongoing life and helps it find new (and relevant) audiences.

Understandably, acquisition and purchase awards are very competitive. But, they are not impossible to attain! The images in this article (above and below) show the first work that I had acquired by an institutional collection. That acquisition happened as a result of applying to one of the calls listed below.

Many of the calls I’ve included here are tied to photography festivals or group exhibitions, whereas others are standalone calls for acquisition/purchase awards without an accompanying exhibition.

In the case that a given hosting institution has a dedicated, general webpage for the opportunity, I have linked that. However, many institutions create new pages (and URLs) for each year’s call. In those cases, I have linked the hosting institution’s home page, which will always link out to the newest call when it is live each year.

I have not indicated general dates, since many institutions open their calls at different times every year. However, for calls that are open at the time of this article’s publication, I have indicated the upcoming deadline and provided a link to the application page.

The Print Center’s Annual International Competition Awards

Eligibility: International

The Print Center (Philadelphia, PA, USA) hosts an annual international competition that highlights local, national, and international artists using print-making and photography in intriguing and innovative ways. The list of awards each year is extensive. It includes solo exhibition opportunities, cash prizes, as well as three separate purchase awards to acquire artists’ work for the permanent collections at the Art Museum of West Virginia, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Working Artist’s Photography Award

Eligibility: International

Working Artist Org (Tacoma, WA, USA) regularly hosts a photography acquisition award call. The award grants one recipient $1,000 in exchange for one piece (or a small series of pieces) to be acquired by the Working Artist Org permanent collection.

Note: At the time of publication, this call is open. The coming deadline is April 19, 2026.

Before this week’s list, I’d like to share a bit about the paid material that’s ahead this year.

Earlier in the year, I published The Big List of Photobook Publishers, which now contains over 200 publishers across the world, as well as information on how to submit projects. I continue to update the list as I find new publishers (including adding one new publisher this week).

Now, I’m excited to share that the bonus material in the coming months will focus practical advice and opportunities to advance you career in the photographic arts. Specifically, I’ll publish several interviews with photographers who have succeeded in breaking through the “emerging” stage and are now regularly mounting solo exhibitions, selling work, and giving artist lectures. These interviews will detail the steps these photographers took during the early to middle stages of their careers to reach the point they’re at now.

Additionally, I’ll published a list of annual open calls that include acquisition awards (i.e. awards in which winning photographers have work purchased for acquisition into an institution’s permanent collection).

I’m excited to share this list, which contains roughly 210 photobook publishers across the globe, as well as information about specific publishers’ submission policies.

Many readers have expressed to me that publication is as important to them (or even more important) than exhibition. With that in mind, my goal is that this list will serve a few purposes:

It will introduce readers to new photobook publishers, especially those in their own region.
It will help readers get a sense of the contemporary field (i.e. what sorts of books are being published by which publishers), as well as help readers find inspiration from contemporary photobooks.
Above all, I hope that this list will help photographers connect directly with publishers and submit photobook projects for publication. To that end, I have added a note and link under each publisher whose website explicitly mentions accepting submissions. (Note: when submitting to any publisher, it is important to research the publisher, as well as respect the publisher’s submission guidelines.)

This list contains all types of photobook publishers: large publishing houses, small independent presses, publishers that focus on small editions and hand-made artist books, and everything in between. I have organized the publishers first by geographic region, then alphabetically within each region.

Researching for this list taught me just how many incredible, distinctive publishers makeup the current photobook industry. Undoubtedly, this list is not comprehensive, and I’d love to continue expanding it! Center for Photography at Woodstock’s Woodstock Artist in Residence (AIR) 2026 | Deadline: 1/31, Fee: FREE, Submission: Work samples, work plan proposal, bio, artist statement, resume/CV, references, headshot, Residency Info: Ten photographers will receive a one month residency, including a $2,000 honorarium, $250 travel stipend, living accommodations in a house with two artist studios (one small and one large), as well as access to a digital media lab, darkroom, and more.
Kraszna-Krausz’s 2026 Book Awards | Deadline: 1/31, Fee: FREE, Submission: Five high-res images from the book, a complete sample PDF of book, high-res image of cover design, Award Includes: The authors of two different winning books will each receive a £5,000 cash prize. Welcome to The Open Call List #99!

Opening Remarks:
Next week will be The Open Call List’s 100th weekly list! In honor of the milestone, next Thursday, January 29, I’ll publish the first bonus article of 2026: a list of over 100 photobook publishers across the world. My goal is that the article will serve as a resource for readers to find publishers in their region and/or genre; a starting point to learn about contemporary photobook publishing trends; and, above all, a way for photographers to find publishers accepting submissions for photobook projects.

A lot of time has gone into researching and writing the list. It encompasses everything from major publishing houses to small independent photobook publishers. I’m very excited to share it next week.

As always, paid subscribers will receive the list in full, and free subscribers will receive a preview of the list. If you are not already a paid subscriber, see the subscription options below to receive the entire list when it is published.

This week’s Open Call List below contains 30 calls for entry, 13 of which offer free submission. The list contains four funded residencies, two funded fellowships, multiple opportunities for photo educators, and a wide range of grants and awards to support photography projects. Additionally, the list contains many opportunities for publication in collective books, solo book projects, magazines, and more. Finally, the list contains a range of exhibition opportunities, including for portraits, pinhole photographs, student photography, documentary photography, and more, as well as many open-ended calls for exhibition.

The Jobs section contains a particularly large amount of new listings this week, including roles at major museums and photo-based organizations in the U.S., several new gallery roles in the U.K., multiple hybrid roles, as well as photographer and photo assistant positions.

Opening Remarks:
This week’s Open Call List contains 30 calls for entry, 19 of which offer free submission. The list includes grants and other funding opportunities for documentary photographers, environmental photographers, photo educators, artist-researchers, socially oriented photo work, and more. Additionally, the list includes photo residencies in Canada, the U.S., and Europe, as well as virtual mentorship opportunities. The list includes publication opportunities for full photobook projects, group magazines, collective photobooks, and more. And, it includes a wide range of calls for work for exhibition across genres as well as open themes.

The Jobs section contains new jobs and internships in the photo arts industry. This week’s new listings are widespread and include a freelance photography role in the U.K., multiple darkroom lab roles in the E.U., a photo educator role at a well-known U.S. arts college, as well as galleries assistantships, internships, and roles at several major photo organizations.

Finally, as we approach the 100th Open Call List in the coming weeks, I’m excited to share that the first paid bonus material of 2026 will be published later this month.
