An Important Update from The Open Call List
Upcoming changes to the subscription model and expanded subscriber benefits
Hi,
I’m writing with important information about upcoming changes to the The Open Call List’s subscription model and reader benefits.
In the year since I started The Open Call List, the newsletter has grown more than I could have envisioned. In that time, I’ve put hundreds of hours into finding, compiling, and vetting open calls, and I’ve shared over 750 opportunities for photographers. I am so grateful for the community that has grown around this newsletter, and I’m excited to keep serving it in better and better ways. However, sustaining the time and energy required to do that means making a necessary change to the newsletter’s subscription model.
The Important Update
Starting on April 21, 2025, The Open Call List will change its payment model. Moving forward, the newsletter will require a paid subscription. Like before, sliding scale subscriptions between $2-$5 a month will be available to maintain accessibility. (A free subscription option will be possible for those with financial need.) Alongside these changes, the newsletter will be expanding reader benefits!
Full details about pricing options are below.
Please note: If you are already a paid subscriber, no action or change is required on your part.
The Benefits!
Beginning April 21, all paying subscribers will continue to receive The Open Call List every week.
They will also have access to a valuable collection of evergreen guides to photography publications, festivals, residencies, photobook awards, and more with open calls.
Finally, I’m very excited to share that, moving forward, paid subscribers will receive a series of benefits inspired by the results of a recent reader survey. These will take the form of expert insights and additional material written specifically to help photographers take the next steps toward their photographic goals, connect with galleries and museums, and find venues and audiences for their work. They include:
Interviews with photography curators at major institutions about how to get your work noticed, how to develop relationships with institutions, the do’s and dont’s of preparing for portfolio reviews, etc.
A directory of contemporary photography galleries that accept submissions for representation and exhibition
A directory of photobook publishers that accept book project submissions for publication
Further benefits will be ongoing and based on reader input. These could include, for example, advice from established and successful photographers, tips about how to approach galleries, a new grant open to subscribers of the newsletter, and more.
As an artist, I created this newsletter to help photographers gain access to the tools, information, and opportunities that can further their careers. I remain dedicated to that mission as The Open Call List and its community continue to grow each day.
Pricing Options
If you are not yet a paid subscriber of the newsletter, to continue receiving The Open Call List, as well as the benefits outlined above, after April 21, 2025, use the links below to access the sliding scale price point that is feasible for you:
Subscribe for…
$5/month (or $50/year)
$4/month (or $40/year)
$3/month (or $30/year)
$2/month (or $20/year)
(If you are already a paid subscriber, you do not need to take any action or make any change to your subscription.)
Finally, if you cannot afford a subscription at any sliding scale level, please email me to request a need-based subscription. I am committed to accessibility, and I will never deny access to the newsletter due to financial need.
As a reader of the work that goes into this newsletter, I hope you’ll understand that this change is necessary to continue dedicating the amount of time and energy required to sustain and grow the newsletter moving forward. I am excited about the future of The Open Call List and the positive community of photographers that continues to grow around it. I sincerely appreciate your support.
Warmly,
Aidan
