Welcome to The Open Call List #21!

In this weekly newsletter, I share opportunities for photographers for exhibitions, publications, fellowships, grants, residencies, jobs, and more. My goal is to make the photography world more accessible, especially to emerging artists. While I include both free opportunities and calls for entry with submission fees, I only share opportunities that favor artists.

This week contains 17 upcoming open calls, as well 25 job opportunities. Recently, several readers have written to suggest open calls to include in the list. If you know of an opportunity that would be appropriate for the newsletter, I'd love to hear about it! Finally, with the school year arriving soon, there are also several internship and fellowship opportunities included below as well.

This is also the final week to submit to The Open Call List’s own Critical Focus Grant. The free-to-enter call is open to student photographers and recent graduates in the state of Arizona, and was made possible by the support of a generous reader of The Open Call List. The deadline to submit is Friday, July 26, at 11:59 pm PST.

• Houston Center for Photography 2024 Fellowship Awards | Deadline: 7/22 (Extended), Fee: $35 HCP membership, Submission: Up to 10 images, artist bio, artist statement, CV, Award: Two artists will be awarded $3,000 and a solo exhibition at the Houston Center for Photography.

• New Inc’s Call for Mentors | Deadline: 7/22, Fee: FREE, Submission: Short answers, headshot, bio, Mentorship Includes: $800 compensation, as well as a New Ideas Fellow Membership, Mentorship Dates: September 2024 to August 2025.

• The Open Call List’s Critical Focus Grant | Deadline: 7/26, Fee: FREE, Submission: 3-5 images, bio, project description, Award: Grant recipient will be awarded $500, as well as a portfolio review, and one runner-up will be awarded $100 in film processing. Restriction: This call is open to student photographers and recent graduates in Arizona.

• The Atlanta Photography Group’s Through The Lens (Exhibition) | Deadline: 7/27, Fee: FREE, Submission: Up to 5 images, Exhibition Dates: August 24 to October 5, 2024, Exhibition Location: Avondale Arts Center, Avondale Estates, GA, USA.

• Manifest Gallery’s Alterpieces (Exhibition + Award) | Deadline: 7/27, Fee: $45, Submission: 3 Images, Awards: Each exhibiting artist as given a $50 honorarium and is eligible for the $1,000 grand jury award, Exhibition Dates: November 8 to December 6, 2024, Exhibition Location: Manifest Gallery, Cincinnati, OH, USA.

• Open Doors Gallery’s OD Photo Prize 2024 | Deadline: 7/28, Fee: £15, Submission: 6-15 Images from a single project, Award: Winner receives £2,000, as well as long-term mentorship through Open Doors Gallery and exhibit exhibition in London, UK (dates and venue TBD).

• Manifest Gallery’s Corpus (Exhibition + Award) | Deadline: 7/28 (Extended), Fee: $45, Submission: 3 Images, Awards: Each exhibiting artist as given a $50 honorarium and is eligible for the $1,000 grand jury award, Exhibition Dates: September 27 to October 25, 2024, Exhibition Location: Manifest Gallery, Cincinnati, OH, USA. Note: This exhibition is looking for works that re-engage that body and explore the impacts of choice of surface, volume, texture, material, and presentation methods on the experience of the image.

• The Image Flow’s “Questionable Taste” (Award) | Deadline: 7/31 (Extended), Fee: FREE, Submission: Up to 5 images, Award: One winner receives a $100 The Image Flow gift card, as well as a 16x20” giclée print of the winning image, and three honorable mentions will receive a 16x20” print of their images.

• M&C Saatchi Group’s Art for Change Prize (+ Exhibition) | Deadline: 7/31 (Extended), Fee: FREE, Award: Five awards of £2,000 and one award of £10,000 will be given out, and all awarded artists will have their work exhibited in London, Exhibition Dates: November 2024 to January 2025, Exhibition Location: Saatchi Gallery, London, UK.

• Royal Photographic Society’s Eamon McCabe Bursary | Deadline: 8/1, Fee: FREE, Submission: 8 Images, project information, Award: £3000 to a photography project responding to the theme of “sporting endeavour,” Restriction: Applicants must be 25 years old or under at the time the application closes.

• Source Photographic Review’s Prize for New Writing about Photography | Deadline: 8/1, Fee: FREE, Submission: An article of no more than 700 words, Prize: £500 and publication in Source Photographic Review. Note: Writing can include book reviews, exhibition reviews, texts introducing sets of pictures, or other forms of writing about photography.

• Bemis Center’s Artist-in-Residence Program | Deadline: 8/1, Fee: $40, Submission: Statement of interest, CV, other short answers, portfolio, Residency Includes: A $1,250 USD monthly stipend and $750 travel stipend, as well as access to the Bemis Center facilities and a private living space, Residency Dates: September 10 to November 15, 2024, Residency Location: Bemis Center, Omaha, NE, USA.

• Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s Los Angeles Solo Exhibition Open Call | Deadline: 8/1 (Extended), Fee: $35, Submission: 5 Images, CV, artist bio, proposal, Exhibition Stipend: $500 honorarium and a $1000 exhibition budget, Exhibition Dates: November 2 to December 10, 2024, Exhibition Location: Tiger Strikes Asteroid LA, Los Angeles, CA, USA.
